Hi everyone! We are going to be reorganizing our ladies group soon and I need some ideas for it as well as a new name. Currently all we do is have a potluck dinner with a short devotional & prayer time at the church once a month. My dh became the pastor of our church 1.5 years ago and it was already running this way before we came. It is not working well though...it is very poorly attended and I hate to say it, but pretty boring (which is probably why it is so poorly attended). We are looking to change it around and incorporate many new ideas along with a name change. I would also like to include some service projects a couple times a year so we can be productive too.

How do we go about setting this new ministry up? What is the name of your ladies group? What day of the week & time do you think is the best time to have your get togethers? Any words of wisdom or ideas you can pass along these lines would be great! Thanks in advance!

Sarah

P.S. Mert, I saw your post earlier about your ladies ministry and I thought you had a lot of great ideas! Thanks for taking the time to post about it!

Our ladies ministry is TLC - The Ladies of Countryside, Touching Ladies for Christ (our church name is Countryside Baptist Church).
You may want to ask the ladies if they have ideas for a name (of course this can backfire if someone gets offended that their name doesn't get picked ).

To mix things up a bit you can try having the meeting in someone's home or a restaurant. We have done both of these (along with having them at the church) and the ladies really love the variety. Another thing that really helps make them fun is to have a theme for the meeting. Themes don't have to be elaborate but they can be if you want them to. We have had themes as simple as an Ice Cream Social and that was one of the favorites. We had the meeting at someone's home, the church provided the ice cream and each lady brought her favorite topping. We decorated with festive colors and balloons and spent the evening singing hymns and then just fellowshiped with one another. The ladies really loved it. The door prizes were ice cream dippers and gift cards to Marble Slab Creamery.
Julia has lots of ideas for themes on her website.

Another thing I have found is don't have meetings too often. The newness wears off and people get tired of them if they have to come too often. We have ours about once every six weeks instead of every month. I prefer to leave the ladies wanting more instead of dreading having to add one more thing to an already busy calender.

As for the time of day and day of week to have a meeting...this will vary from church to church. I prefer to do ours on a Monday or Tuesday night. I don't like having them on the weekend as most people are already busy on the weekend. Our ladies seem to find it easier to give up a night of the week instead of part of a Saturday. But that can vary with each group.

Hope that helps. Please post any other specific questions you may have.

Our ladies group does not have a name, but I have been thinking about this myself lately. I would like to have name for our group but then I began to think about our purpose and how does it relate to the purpose of the church. I realized that our group of ladies do not really know what the purpose of our meetings and ministry are. So, I want to somehow get the ladies to re-discover our purpose and then have them submit some thoughts on a name for our group. The ladies of my church are not goal-oriented and this will take lots of thought and prayer to get them re-focused. It seems they do not want to help or participate... only partake. I usually end up doing all the work and provide the food. But I keep praying that this will change and I will let it.

When my husband took this church, there was already a weekly ladies' Bible study taught by the pastor's wife (that's me now!). Our last church met once a month on Saturdays at 1 pm, so this was a change, but a good one for us. We try to keep the Bible studies to about an hour, no theme, an ice breaker or quick game, and mostly teaching with some prayer requests at the end.

Every other month we have a Ladies' Night Out on Friday at 6 pm (in lieu of Thurs Bible study), and we have quite a few more ladies come. It is almost always potluck so we don't have to charge, and I try to come up with simple but creative decorations to go with the theme. Prizes are ALWAYS from the dollar store or the dollar aisle at Michael's or Target. I agree that themes always keep these activities fun, and they streamline your thinking in terms of games, a devotional, etc. (One note - I had one of these as a potluck brunch on a Saturday, and it was a hit this year! I think I may do that twice this year).

When I used to teach a monthly meeting, we scheduled a volunteer the month before to bring a snack, and I tried to remind them closer to the date. We also determined where the next meeting would be the month before, so that if any lady wanted to, she could open up her home. If not, it was held at the church.

Hi Ladies,

Since you are all discussing this topic, I just wanted to throw in that I've been wanting to do a page for the website with a list of name suggestions for church ladies groups. It's something I've been asked about a lot in the past. Although I don't think you always need a name for your ladies groups, especially in smaller churches. I do know in bigger churches where there is a lot going on with a lot of different groups sometimes it's just more practical to come up with a name though. I know too it sometimes makes people feel like they are part of something when it has a name. I guess there are probably some pros and cons on having or not having a name for your ladies groups but for those who'd like some suggestions, I thought I'd make a list.

Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions for my list, could you please email them to me. I've got a few now, but would love everyone's input. Thanks. Just send me a private message or email me. My contact form is here.

Thanks a bunch

Hi, I am now the coleader of our women's ministry team at our church. My friend is really the one with all of the great ideas; she's the other coleader. We are changing the way things are done in our group, but I think that there is a lot of excitement about it. First, we invited ladies that we wanted as a part of our team to my home for a very nice tea one Saturday morning. We had junior high girls serve the food and drinks, then had a meeting in my formal living room, where we shared about our mission and hopes for the next year. We contacted all of the ladies a week afterward to see who was interested in being involved. All of them are willing to help out, and six were willing to be on our core team.

We are doing a Saturday seminar in September, where various ladies from the church and town are going to give mini classes in interesting areas - scrapbooking, cooking, child rearing issues, medical issues, etc. We are planning on having a "keynote speaker" at that, as well.

We plan to do a "the Way we Were" event, where we'll do a carry in or salad supper type thing, followed by sharing our wedding photos (I know, not all ladies are married). However, when we had a small group out in Oregon, several of the church widows were in our group. They loved the night that we all brought our wedding pictures. They each shared how they met their husbands, and it was so special to hear their stories, and to see the love that they still had for their men. We thought that would be good here, in order to get interest from some of the older ladies.

Those are just a couple of ideas. There are a lot of books out there with ideas - perhaps you could do a google search or search on Amazon or something? God bless - Tess

Our ladies chose the name The VW's, although they tease each other over whether it stands for The Virtuous Women or The Virtuous Wanna-bes. It all stemmed from a humorous book on Prov. 31. I think it was called, "Help! I'm Being Intimidated by the Proverbs 31 Woman!"

At our old church we had a contest to name the group. Everyone submitted names anonymously and we put them on a ballot. I think there were over 25. We took the 3 that had the most votes and voted again. They were called the Women of Vision.

If I think of any more I'll let you know.
