Hi Ladies
Last year my sister taught me how to quilt. My first quilt(s -I made 5 in one week) was a "Rag Quilt". It is REALLY cute and makes a great baby quilt. Very easy to do. If anyone is interested I will be happy to send you instructions so that you can quilt them for yourselves.

Hi there-
A couple of you have asked for the instructions so I thought I would go a head and put them up (If they will fit). This quilt is SO easy it's not even funny. I have only been sewing for one year and this was the first thing I sewed. (I completed 5 in one week........of course all I was doing was sewing and visiting with my sister )

Rag Quilt

This quilt is made up of 6 rows with 5 squares in each row. All seams are sewn wrong sides together. Approx. finished size is 40" x 48".

Supplies:·

* 3 yds. of assorted fabrics. If you are using flannels, denims or homespun you will want to use similar “weights” of fabric. I personally like BRIGHT cottons or flannels for baby quilts.·

* 1/2 yd. of Warm & Natural Cotton (Yes it MUST be Warm & Natural. Most quilt shops and definitely Jo Ann’s fabric store sell it.)Directions:Use ½ inch seams throughout.

1. Cut 60 8 ½ " squares from the fabric. Cut 60 7 ½ " squares from batting.

2. Make a little quilt sandwich of fabric (right side down of backing), batting square (center batting square) and top square (right side up). Sew an X from one corner to the opposite corner.

3. Stitch 5 squares together (wrong sides together) to form row. Stitch using ½ " seam allowance.

4. Complete 6 rows of 5 squares each. Stitch rows together.

5. Clip seam allowances at ½" to ¾" intervals being careful not to clip into seams.

6. To fringe seam allowances, wash and dry quilt.

HINT #1: To avoid clogging drains when fringing quilt, use commercial laundromat facilities unless you have a lint trap on your home washer. Check dryer lint trap frequently and remove lint built up.

HINT #2: Several blocks of your quilt may be pieced as desired.

HINT #3: it is very easy to make this a larger quilt simply by adding to your rows and to the number of rows. A twin size would be approximately 7-8 by 10-12.

To see a picture of what the quilt looks like (Sorry I tried but couldn't get one up on the message boards) go to (long address hope it turns into a hyper link for you)

I forgot to tell you that to make this quilt it is really helpful to have quilter's tools. A cutting mat, quilter's ruler and a rotary cutter. Jo Ann's fabric has a set that you can buy, it is about 40 dollars. However, if you watch they frequently have sales on "quilting notions" maybe these would fall under that and you could get them for slightly less. Also, if you sign up to receive their flyer by mail you become a prefered customer. When you get your flyer you will get a cupon for 50%!!! off! Now that is on one item or one cut (fabric - great for buying a stash of batting. I usually buy my batting this way. Then rather than 9 dollars a yard for warm and natural it's 4.5) Happy quilting.

WooHooo! We are going to have a new grandbaby! The end of May! I am ready to start on a Baby quilt!
How did I miss all the quilters on this Board!?! This is great.
I like your directions for the rag quilt. I will have to use my coupon for some flannels! Last year I made a tote bag by that method out of homespun and I am always getting comments on it. My neighbor (Who has a lot more energy) made 24 raggy homespun totes before Christmas and sold them for $15-$18 each. I can imagine your baby quilt is beautiful . Is there any way to put pictures here?
What are you working on now, Deb?
Do you have some applique to take to the hospital?
Praying for you,
Eva, getting her sewing machine out in PA

Hey Eva
Actually I HATE applique, though as my sister likes to remind me a year ago I hated sewing!

No, I don't have anything to take with me to the hospital. I think I will just read and sleep (and try not to dream of bed pans )

Right now I am working on a couple of dresses for my grand daughters. I have modified a pattern (sounds fancy but all I have done is add an apron ) REALLY easy.

I have also designed a quilt for my sister called "Twist around Kate". It is a modified version of a quilt I saw in one of my quilt mags. called "Around the Twist"

I figure I'll have 4 weeks of quilting once I get out of the hospital.
