The theme for our mother-daughter banquet this year is "Harmony". I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for a devotional and/or scripture verses that would go with this them.
Thanks so much. |

The first thought that comes to mind is an illustration of music -- each instrument, each voice, each part coming together to create something beautiful and edifying to listen to. Scripture doesn't have that example exactly, but it is similar to the idea of I Corinthians 12 about different members of the church having different gifts and being like different parts of the body which works together.
Another verse that comes to mind is Ps 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! and also
Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. The word "unity" might seem to contradict "harmony", because w it would make people think of singing in unison instead of harmonizing. But you can think of it as harmony within unity -- in otherwords, we are not called to walk in lockstep doing the exact same thing, but as we each exercise our gifts and fulfil what God has called us to do, we harmonzie and walk in unity. (Hope that makes sense. )
There are several Scriptures in Psalms that talk about praising the Lord with music that could bring in the idea of harmony:
Ps. 33:2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
Ps. 92: 1 A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:
2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,
3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.
4 For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.
5 O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.
Ps 144:9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
1Ch 15:16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.
Ooh -- this is a good one (just looking up verses in my online Bible--) -- I think this was when Solomon finshed the temple and they brought the ark of the covenant in. It talks about the musicians and singers "as one," praising the Lord, and He came down in His glory:
2Ch 5: 12 Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets: 13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD; 14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God. |
