We just found out my sister is pregnant. She is very conservative and modest, only wearing dresses or skirts. We're trying to help her find some things to wear and finding it quite difficult. If you can find a dress at all it's not something she would wear--too short, plunging necklines, etc.
I've tried looking at thrift stores with no success. I'm not a seamstress so sewing one is out.

Money is tight for them, so price is important.

Any good ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I can definately feel your pain. I ran into the same problem with my pregnancies. It was so bad that when my husband tried to shop for me at the Maternity store in the mall (can't remember the name) he nicely complained to the girls that worked there. How come there are no dresses or skirts? If there are skirts they barely cover the subject because they are so short.
I had some success with online auctions. I purchased some things through Ebay and there was another online auction specifically for mothers (can't remember the name). Of course you are taking a chance on the condition and sometimes you have to buy items in lots. When I had to buy items in lots I just gave away the items I didn't want.
The other thing I did was to just buy regular dresses in styles that were loose fitting anyway. At the time I was a size 4 so I could buy a size 8 and get lots of wear out of it.
And don't give up on the thrift stores. They are always getting in different stuff. You just have to hit it at the right time.
Is there anyone that you know that maybe she could borrow some maternity clothes from?
Hope it works out for her and congratulations on the pregnancy.

Garage sales are wonderful place to find maternity clothes - as long as you get there early! They go quickly. I found a lot of my maternity clothes at garage sales. I realize it's a little early for there to be garage sales, unless you live in a warm climate.
I agree with Jodi, that thrift stores are also a good place. My Goodwill store carries a lot of clothes.
Also, have you made her need known at church? There might be some ladies that are looking to get rid of maternity clothes and would let you have them for little or nothing. Our church is very good at passing hand-me-downs along, and it's so helpful.
Another possibility - you can check in your town and surrounding towns to see if they have a baby pantry. They often have maternity clothes, as well as baby and children's clothing. Along the same lines, if you go to a Crisis Pregnancy Center, or Pregnancy Care Center, they may have clothing that they would help you out with.
I hope you can find some things for her. Let us know how your search goes.

I don't know if this will help you but this is what I did. When I read your letter I went right to "google" and typed in "modest style maternity clothes" and found a whole bunch of places. I clicked on one that said modest apparel. There are some real cute dresses there. Just click on "maternity/nursing" and then go down a ways to you will find what your looking for

Just a suggestion, but depending on the size you are looking for, most of the women in our church just found regular clothes in a size or two bigger that would accomodate their growing belly. Baby doll tops are a good, anything with a princess? waistline (I am not sure if that is the technical word for it, but a higher waistline), and stretchy material such as knit with a loose fitting waist. The problems only came when the plus size ladies were looking for clothing....that was the hardest for us to find since the bigger sizes are so much more expensive. A lot of women just "borrowed" pieces from other women in the church, and returned them after the pregnancy. Since most of them weren't pregnant at the same time, or were in different stages of their pregnancies, this worked well. Good Luck!

Thank you all for the suggestions.

A couple of weeks ago my sister lost the baby. It's just been too hard to think about.

I hope this thread is a help to others who might be looking for modest maternity clothes.

Thanks again.
