We found out this week that the spot on my my mom's kidney was actually a baseball sized tumor. It is indeed cancer, but there is good news. The tumor is completely encapsulated, so it has not spread. On March 5 she will be having surgery to remove the tumor and kidney. The doctor says that neither chemo nor radiation will be needed. Praise the Lord! Please pray with me that everything will go as planned, and that the tumor will not have broken open and spread.
Also, a big problem - but not bigger than my God! - is that they have no insurance. My dad is a pastor, so they don't make a lot of money, and this surgery will be very expensive, with a 3-5 day hospital stay. We would so appreciate your prayers that the financial aspect will all work out. And from a practical standpoint, if anyone has experience dealing with something like this, possibly getting the hospital to write some off as charity, I would really appreciate any information you can pass on. We've never dealt with such a large bill as this is going to be, but I've heard that there are means of help out there; I just don't know how to find out.
Thank you all for your prayers. It's nice to have this place to share requests, and I want to thank Julia for it.
Love,
Bethany

Hi Bethany,

So sad to hear about your mother's condition but so wonderful to hear it has not spread. I'm not sure which direction to point you to help for the financial end but maybe someone else has dealt with a similar situation. I will pray for you, your mother, and God's special hand in this.

...And you are welcome

Thank you for your prayers, Julia.

I just realized as I re-read my post, that it sounds like I'm asking someone to help me figure out how to get my parents out of paying the bill! That's not it at all. My parents have always paid off their bills, and in lean times, made payments on bills that they couldn't pay off. I know that hospitals are (supposedly) not able to turn you over as long as you're making regular payments. But this is going to be such a massive amount of money- more than we paid for our home - that I want to try and find a way to help them if I can. I know that God can and will provide, but I think it's also good to be proactive in looking for a solution.

I don't know if that explanation helped or not! lol I just didn't want anyone to think that my parents were lazy bums wanting to shirk their duty of paying off the hospital and doctor bills! They haven't even asked me to do this; I just wanted to be able to present them with some suggestions that could help them out. And I thought that maybe someone here has experienced this and could offer pointers.

Did that make any sense?! Anyway, please pray!!

Hi Bethany,

Thanks for explaining but I understood where you were coming from on that Didn't think they were shirking at all. Just thought you wanted some direction to look for for help that's all. I'm sure people will understand what you mean.

Thanks, Julia! I'm sure I'm just being overly sensitive, but I never want anyone to think badly of my family. And I wasn't sure if I was very clear in the first post, 'cause I wrote it late at night!

Bethany,

I understood what you meant.
I have known people who have had surgery, once they got the bill they went to the finance office of the hospital and explained there was no insurance. The hospital then adjusted the bill because there was no insurance and the people made payments on the outstanding amounts.

My parents have done this also. Two of my sisters have had major back surgeries. Although insurance did cover 80% it still left a huge portion for my parents to pay. So they made monthly payments in the amount they could afford until it was paid off.

You may want to start with the finance office of the hospital. Call and see what the procedure is for patients with no insurance. Ask if they have a program for writing off portions of the bill.

Will be praying for all of you as you go thru this time in your life.

Thank you, Shirl, for your prayers as well. And welcome to the forum!

An update:
My mom's surgery date has been scheduled for March 5. We don't know the time yet. All her pre-op stuff has gone well, so it looks like it will be going ahead as planned.
